Hello friends, and thank you for showing interest in the affordable housing challenge! Here I will describe our mission and what the purpose of this challenge is. We are looing for participants from all backgrounds to propose floorplans, develop site plans and standards, and in general contribute to this affordability project.
Our primary objective is to develop a portfolio of small, stylish, and affordable house plans for average working Americans to purchase and build. American housing has a habit of ballooning in both size and price, and this project aims to constrain the size of the houses so that they continually remain in the affordable category.
Criteria:
1) Houses should be between 1200 and 1600 sf. Participants may be tempted to always build to the maximum allowable size, but the real frontier of designing these houses to create maximum utility and architectural value in the SMALLEST possible space.
2) The houses should be maximized for AFFORDABILITY. As such, using the most affordable materials (in creative and stylish ways) is highly encouraged.
3) Consider furnishing the house with the most affordable furnishes (example: IKEA) that average families could obtain.
